What IS this?
A question often asked about my work.
Simply put, felted art.
Felting is a natural process of wool..it’s alchemy. I’m intrigued by the abilities of felted wool to be sculpted into both soft, light weight clothing as well as sculptural headwear. Felt predates woven fabric and I have adapted the ancient process of felting to contemporary design. Loose wool fibers are composed by hand taking into consideration surface design and structure. Simple soap and water are applied to the layout to provide lubrication and this wet mass is rolled up and agitated in a variety of ways, thus coaxing the wool to fuse. Eventually, heat is applied to quicken the shrinkage and shaping. Each piece is a sculptural object as the structure, including body shape and attractive flair is programmed into the felted wool without sewing. Each piece I create is a 3-dimensional composition with no sewn seams. In a world of ubiquitous plastic-based outer wear, I strive to create 21st century fashion with a sustainable material appreciated for its warmth and inherent water repellency.
Since moving to the Pacific Northwest, I’ve delved into the world of Wearable Art. When you understand the properties of each type of wool, and apply the elements of color, form, and subject, the creative possibilities are endless. The surface designs are much like paintings but created with wool and fabrics to create color and texture and depth. What I've found I appreciate most are the discussions which arise due to the fascination with these unique pieces.
